Solar Panel Revolution?

By TnFlash

Lowe’s Home Improvement has announced that 21 of its California stores will offer a “one-stop-shop” for energy management. The focus of the 21 new Energy Centers in California will be on three areas for saving energy and money. The first will be on measuring energy use or waste with power monitors and other devices. Secondly they will work on reducing your energy consumption. Lastly, generating and using renewable energy with solar panels. Lowe’s says it will expand the new services to other stores in Canada and the US during the next year.

Solar Panels

Lowe’s Home Improvement will be selling the Akeena Solar’s Andalay AC Solar Power System ($893 per panel), winner of a 2009 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Product Award. The system has built-in inverters that produce household AC power; this avoids using any high-voltage DC wiring. In addition to the system’s simplicity and safety, the racking, wiring and electrical grounding components are integrated into the solar panels. The modular design of the panels allows homeowners to start by installing one panel, and then add more later. Lowe’s will be the first major retail to offer grid-connected solar panels which can be installed by homeowners. Grid-connected solar systems allow you to pass excess power out to the electric utilities’ power grid. By passing excess power to the grid your electric meter runs backward during times of excess power generation, then pull power back into their home during low power production periods.

Wind Turbines

Lowe’s will soon be offering utility-connected wind turbines by special order. Tax credits and incentives are available for eligible solar power and wind-generating systems. The 10,000 watt Excel-S turbine by Bergey Windpower is installed on a 100-foot tower, and is suitable for rural homes, farms and small businesses. Cascade Renewable Energy’s 1,000 watt Swift Wind Turbine has a 7-foot wingspan and can be mounted to a rooftop or pole at various heights. With its innovative design it will be suitable for urban and suburban areas.

This could be the start of the Solar Revolution. Other home improvement centers could start offering similar products. This will increase availability, lower prices, and improve the technology of home solar systems.  All of these factors will be good for the home owning consumer.

Interesting article. I was under the impression it would take quite a few panels to get started, therefore it would take a while to recoop your investment. It sounds like Lowe's is on top the game.

Pamela - thanks for the comment. It does take several to start making a big difference. But we all have to start somewhere.

There should be a lot more solar panel I can tell you that.

@Albertttt - Thanks for the comments! Solar panels and wind turbines are coming. The biggest obstacle will be the utility companies that don't want to lose customers to Alternative energy.

I have always though that it would be really cool to build your own solar panels. Well, here's the next best thing!

Thanks for letting us know about Lowe's new focus on energy management products and services.

Two thoughts come to mind: First -- congratulation to Lowe's for helping people save energy and money. Second, Lowe's must believe there's money to be made in energy management.

@John Dove - Thanks for the comment! You are right on both thoughts. I'm curious how the utility companies are going to react to this.

great info on solar panels, I am seriously considering getting these installed in my house!

Great article. One of our local stores just rebuilt (they moved a few hundred meters to a bigger building) their store and put up a number of wind turbines and solar panels to run the lights. Hopefully this catches on more.

I visited Denmark last year and was struck with awe at the number of wind turbines there.

@vanicama23 & solar panels for sale. Thanks for the comments. I too hope this technology catches on. It will save everyone money and make the earth a better place.

@ConradM. Thanks for the comments. Wind turbines are in my opinion a better deal. They are cheaper, and run 24 hours a day. The problem is having wind and a place to mount them up high enough to catch the best winds, Thanks again!

Dude, this is a great hub. I have several friends that have set up basic solar panels. One guy runs his "man cave" completely off of solar. He has a battery bank and all. He does have to be careful about what he turns on together, but with a few more batteries and a couple of more panels it won't be an issue.

@sleeperno - Thank for the comment. Glad to see someone taking advantage of this technology!

I love the idea of using solar and wind power. Maybe one day we can implement this as a standard for powering all homes, etc. :)Great hub!

Becky, Thanks for the comment. I'd like to use this technology on my home. I'm not sure how easily this will pass the home owners association.

This is an interesting Hub. We are seeing an increase in solar panels here in England.
