Information on Rare Welsh Gold from the Clogau Gold Mine

By

One of the rarest forms of gold comes from the Clogau Gold Mine in northern Wales. This Welsh Gold is becoming scarcer as time passes. Welsh gold has the unique quality of being pinkish in color due to copper deposits found in the area. Only 3 mines in the world produce this type of gold. The Clogau mine is the most famous mine where this gold has been found. This mine is located in the Snowdonia mountain range in northern Wales. The gold veins in these 3 mines have been nearly depleted for many years. Almost all of these mines have been turned into tourist attractions because so little of the gold is left in the mines and it is costly and dangerous to mine these claims.

Welsh Gold in Jewelry

Welsh gold is almost always mixed with other gold in jewelry to allow the wearer to have a touch of Welsh gold in their jewelry. This is due to the fact Welsh gold is so rare and expensive to buy. Each piece of Clogau gold jewelry comes with a certificate of authenticity. Welsh jewelry is often inspired by their landscape, symbols and the language. Welsh phrases like “Cariad” and “Am Byth” are often engraved on pieces of Welsh jewelry. “Cariad” is the Welsh term for love and sweetheart. “Am Byth” is the term for forever. You will find Sessile acorns and leaves on adorning Welsh jewelry. The Sessile Oak tree is the national tree of Wales. It lives to be 300-500 years old. And it is considered to be a symbol of Welsh heritage. The Welsh Red Dragon and different Celtic weaves are also found incorporated into Welsh jewelry.

If you are ever fortunate enough to have an opportunity to acquire any Welsh gold jewelry, it could be a rare and valuable piece of history that you could pass down through your family for years to come.

Clogau Gold - Rare Welsh Beauty

Welsh Gold and Royalty

In 1923 two rings were made from a single Clogau gold nugget for The Duke of York when he married Lady Elizabeth Bowe-Lyn. Their daughter, now Queen Elizabeth II, also used this Welsh gold for her wedding ring. Clogua gold wedding rings have since become a tradition with the royal family. Princess Margaret, Princess Diana, and Prince Charles have followed in this tradition of Welsh gold wedding rings. In 1986 Queen Elizabeth II was given a kilogram of pure Welsh Gold to commemorate her 60th birthday. Another notable includes, Michael Douglas also gave Catherine Zeta Jones a Welsh gold wedding ring when they married in 2000.

Welsh Gold Mine History

The Dolaucothi Gold Mines are the earliest known Welsh gold mines. It was possibly opened in the Bronze Age and was closed in 1938. In 1941 it was donated to the National Trust. A hoard of gold objects was found in the village of Pumsaint close to the mines. These objects are now in the British Museum. The Dolaucothi mines are most notable for the exploration done on a large scale in the Roman period, from 75 AD to at least 300 AD. The mining was done under Roman control from a small fort.

The Gwenfynydd Gold Mine was discovered in 1860. It produced 45,000 troy ounces of Welsh gold from 1884. The Gwenfynydd Gold Mine was closed in 1998 due to health and safety issues and the changing pollution control legislation. While it was open, it provided guided tours to the public and included an opportunity to pan for gold.

The bulk of the gold mining in the Clogau mine started during the gold rush of 1862. The mine was a steady producer until 1911. It produced 2,442 kilograms of gold. Since then small scale operations have been attempted but have proven to be too dangerous and costly. Even plans to turn it into a tourist attraction have been shelved due to these reasons.

Wow, I have never heard anything about these mines before. However, the jewelry is very beautiful; I can see why people would want to save their purchases and keep it within the family for generations as a timeless heirloom.

Interesting stuff about the Welsh gold - apart from being red is there any way of proving that a piece of jewellery is Welsh gold as opposed to any other type, eg English? A hallmark letter or something else?

TnFlash 22 months ago

@ Anna Johnson, Thanks for the comment. Most jewelry makers will give you a letter of authenticity. I'm unsure about the makers mark. I will investigate.

This is a well researched hub on an interesting topic.

I have just enjoyed a visit to Snowdonia, but did not visit the mines as it was snowing most of the time. Very pretty but not good for travel.

2patricias, Thanks for the comment! This is a topic that interests me and I hope I can visit the mines someday.
