How to Buy Antique Wedding Engagement Rings In Pawn Shops?

By

If you are looking to buy an engagement ring, you may want to look into antique engagement rings. They are often overlooked when one is thinking about buying a diamond ring, because many women prefer new jewelry over used. However, if you find the right one, she might just forget about everything that she has ever thought about wanting a new ring. Just be sure that you help her pick out the ring (or at least tell her that you are looking at antiques). Otherwise you have a disaster in the making.

If you are just beginning to look for the perfect ring for your special someone, you are probably overwhelmed. Every diamond ring you see even that tiny one seems ridiculously expensive. And that is because they are. Even though there are hundreds of diamonds in every American mall, and even though almost every woman has some in her possession, diamonds are seen as rare. However, if you know where to look, you can find a great bargain.

After looking for a while, you must realize how hard it is to find the perfect ring within an acceptable price range. Diamond rings at jewelry stores cost thousands of dollars, and it is near impossible to know whether or not you are truly getting a good deal. Even wholesale diamond stores charge thousands for their rings.

There is simply no diamond store that has a great ring at an amazing price. If you want this deal, you might want to think about getting creative with your shopping.

Now, this is where antique engagement rings come in. If you are creative with your shopping, you can find a great deal on a beautiful ring. Antique rings (not "antique style" rings) are not priced by large diamond companies, as they are (by nature) used. Thus, it is very possible to find an unusually good deal, or you can simply get lucky and be in the right pawn shop at the right time.

Pawn shops, as mentioned above, are a good place to check for antique engagement rings. It may be harder to find the perfect ring there now with the immense popularity of online shopping sites like eBay and craigslist. However, it probably won't hurt to check some out. If you find a great stone or a great setting in a pawn shop but you do not like the rest of the ring, you can always have it re-customized.

Instead of pawn shops, you may prefer to shop online. There are many places that offer antique rings online one only needs to search "antique engagement rings"' in order to discover what is available. The great advantage of online shopping is that you get to browse many, many more options than you would be able to in a pawn shop.

There are three problems with buying a ring online, however. One, the seller may not be reputable. Two, seeing a picture online is not equivalent to trying the ring on in person. Three, prices may be higher online than in pawn shops because it is very possible that some sellers bought their jewelry from those very same shops.

The final and least expensive option for finding an antique diamond (or other gemstone) ring is inquiring among relatives. You may want to ask female relatives if they have engagement rings that you can look at. Think about your family members do you have an aunt who got divorced and kept her wedding ring? Does your grandma keep hers around but never wears it anymore? Of course, not every relative wants to be asked this question. Be sure to be very tactful if you decide to ask around the family.

There are several benefits and several deterrents to getting an antique ring from a relative. Benefits include the fact that it is an heirloom rather than just a ring you bought in a store, and it is also cheap, if not free. Deterrents include the fact that it may not be the correct style, and it may be less desirable if it symbolizes a failed marriage.

The main benefit of these engagement rings is that they are generally cheaper than other engagement rings. They are also eco-conscious. Re-using a ring instead of buying a new one contributes to the cause of cutting back on diamond and metal mining, which are generally hazardous to the environment. Antique rings also have historical value, and come in many different styles. Often the styles are unlike any new rings that can be found today.

Tips for Antique Engagemant Rings

So what are some types of antique rings? Well, many of these rings are not made from diamonds. This is because only semi-recently did rings made completely of diamonds become the standard in engagement rings. Antique diamond rings come in many different styles, as mentioned before, and often feature gemstones other than diamonds. These rings offer a unique look; with them you can match a ring to any personality.

When looking to purchase an antique wedding ring, it is important to keep several things in mind. One, not all rings that are called 'antique' are really antique. There are rings that are fashioned in an antique style, and some rings are just called "antique" for no particular reason.

To know if a ring is truly antique, check out its description. Does the description mention the year and style of the ring? If not, the ring is probably not really antique, or the person who is selling it does not know the information. If in doubt, ask a professional.

Another important element to consider when shopping for an antique (or any) ring is that you do not need to purchase the ring "as is." Some rings only feature the band, which means that you can add the diamond or other gemstone later on. Also, bands can often be re-sized, which means that if you find the perfect ring but it is not her size you are not out of luck.

Just remember, antique engagement rings vary widely, both in style and in price. Just because a ring is old does not mean it is cheap. If you want a good price, look for good deals and scrounge around a bit in pawn shops. The result may be the perfect ring at an amazing price.

Nice hub. i love antique jewelry and I am so fortunate that my wedding ring is an antique diamond that was passed down in my husband's side of the family. Someday it will get passed to the next generation.

Pamela, Thanks for the comment. I think what you're doing is a wonderful idea. Passing important heirlooms from generation to generation is a great way to build a sense of family pride and history in future generations.

What a great way to differentiate yourself from the rest of the jewelry buyers (and wearers). Thanks from a fellow TKA'er

@ConradM. Thanks for the comments! I like the idea of antique jewelry because it is different and carries the history of another time and place.

You covered some great points to consider when buying an antique ring. I was fortunate, like Pamela, to have an engagement ring passed down through my husband's family. As the video you published mentions, my ring had wearability issues, and so I had the diamond re-set and even managed to sell the old platinum setting for a good price. Getting a good deal on antique jewelry can be a challenge, but it's also a lot of fun.

Thumbs up!

@Sally's Trove - Thank You for the Comment! Yes, finding a good deal can be a challenge but hopefully you only have to do it once in a life time. My wife and have been married for 26 years. I wish I had been smart enough back then to use some of my own suggestions.

Great hub, I've just started looking at engagement rings and you're right, it's completely overwhelming. I had considered an antique ring but this would be a good option to get the unique ring I'm looking for. Thanks for the info.

TnFlash 2 years ago

@LRobbins - Thanks for the comments. I also like the older style rings and most where hand made. I always felt they were better made. Thanks again.

Excellent information about what to look out for when buying an antique ring. Useful video too, I hadn't thought about checking the shank of the ring for wearability but that's an important factor. Thanks for an awesome Hub.
