A Beginners Guide to Organic Gardening
74Organic Gardening can be incredibly satisfying hobby. Imagine growing your own personal organic herbs, vegetables, and fruits. However, many gardeners depend on pesticides, herbicides and fungicides as well as chemical fertilizers to help their garden grow. It is not only unnecessary, but it can be unhealthy. All those nutritious vegetables and fruits pack a more healthy punch if they’re grown without harmful chemicals.
Step A - Prepare your Soil
Because your soil will be the foundation of the garden, you will need to make certain it’s filled with the proper nutrients to feed your garden. Blend in organic material like compost or humus and consider getting your soil tested. The correct soil conditions will make the difference between a sparse harvest and award winning vegetables.
Step B - Select your Plants
The second step to create an organic garden is to choose your plants. What will you grow in your garden? Initially, in addition to what you’re planning to grow, you will want to decide if you wish to buy plants or start your garden from seed. If you start early enough you should use seeds. Otherwise, you can buy organic plants from the local nursery.
Regardless of what you select, seeds or plants make certain they are grown with out chemicals.
Step C - Organize your garden.
Did you know some plants naturally protect other plants from disease and pests? It is true. Marigolds for instance, drive insects away and when you plant them around the border of the garden, they will help protect your herbs, greens and vegetables.
Prior to moving your plants in to your garden, mark where you’re going to plant them. Make certain there's plenty of space between plants so that they have room to develop and flourish. A tiny tomato plant can grow several feet high and several feet wide. Leave plenty of room.
Step D - Organic Garden Pest Control
It’s been said that home gardeners generally use more chemical substances on their gardens than farmers do. That’s a lot of chemicals! Interestingly enough, mild detergent and water protect many plants from unwanted pests. Hot pepper sprays work to fend off unwanted pests. And natural predators such as frogs and ladybugs will keep your garden healthy and full.
Step E - Maintaining Your Organic Garden
Watering and weeding are all that’s needed until it’s time for you to harvest. Be careful to not over water. Soil needs to be moist but not soaking. Weed regularly to ensure your plants have all of the nutrients and room they need to grow. Weeds will rob your soil of nutrients needed by your crops.
Summary
Organic and natural gardening is not hard when you begin with a healthy foundation. Before you decide to dive in and begin a garden large enough to feed an army, select a few plants you know your loved ones will enjoy. Start a small garden to gain experience. This will guarantee all of your mistakes will be small ones. Next year you'll be able to grow a larger garden. Happy Gardening!!
